Moving Through the Pages

Lesson: Preschool-Grade K

Objective: To demonstrate creativity. To appreciate differences.

Materials: Movement cards (see below) with pictures of Martin playing, doing a silly pose, singing, rocking, and dancing.

Procedure: Remind students of the story Martin Mixed-Up at the Beach. Martin tries to make his sister happy. Show students one of the movement cards. Tell students that when you flip a card, they will act out the movement on the card. Then, when you clap your hands three times, they’ll stop. Maybe you have another signal in your classroom you want to use. Try one card together.  For example, show the card “dance”.  Students dance in their own way for about ten seconds. Then, clap three times.  Then try the other cards one by one.

Culminating Activity: Tell students that everyone acted out the movements differently. No one did exactly the same movement. Talk about how everyone is different. What a wonderful thing!
