I started to write Martin Mixed-Up at the Beach when my son was a baby and wouldn’t stop crying! I tried everything to calm him down. I knew I wanted to write a picture book, and now I had something to write about! When I first drew big brother Martin and sister, they didn’t look the same way they do now. You could hardly tell they were mice! People would say, “what kind of animal are they?”, “are they hamsters?”, “guinea pigs?”.
Even though they looked like mice to me, I thought about those questions. It seemed important for people to know the kind of animal I drew, and it was important to me that people knew they were mice. So...I made their ears taller and their tails longer. Their noses grew. And, yes, they looked more like mice! Thinking back, I know those people with all the questions helped to make my pictures better. But Martin’s sister still cried just as much as before, even though I made her look more like a mouse! Oh well!
Okay...So right now there is ONE book, but there are more to come!
